What life coach certification is
A life coach certification is a credential from a training provider or a professional body. It says you completed a course of study in coaching and passed some form of assessment. It is evidence of training, not a license to practice.
Life coaching itself is a working relationship in which a coach helps a client get clear on a goal, plan the steps toward it and keep going when progress stalls. The goals vary widely, from health habits and relationships to confidence, career direction and life after a big change.
A coach works with what the client wants to do next. A coach does not diagnose or treat anything, and that is the line that separates coaching from therapy. Do you need a certification or a license to be a life coach?
No to both. Life coaching is not a licensed occupation, and no US state issues a license to practice as a life coach. You do not need a certificate of any kind to start, and nobody can stop you using the title.
Therapy and counseling are different. They are licensed professions in every state, because they treat mental health conditions. A life coach who starts treating anxiety or depression has stepped into licensed work. The professional response is to refer the client to a licensed therapist, and to keep coaching alongside that care only if it suits the client.

So why get certified at all? Because the title is open, clients look for other evidence that a coach knows the work. A certification with a real assessment is one of the clearest. How to choose a life coach certification program
Programs differ in what they teach, how they assess you and who stands behind the credential. Compare them on their own published requirements, not on their advertising. Two broad kinds are common.
Program certificates are issued by a school or training company when you complete its course and pass its assessment. They suit people starting out who want a method and a credential to begin practicing with. Our own certification is this kind.
Professional coaching credentials are best known from the International Coaching Federation (ICF). It awards three levels, the Associate Certified Coach (ACC), the Professional Certified Coach (PCC) and the Master Certified Coach (MCC). Each requires coach-specific training hours, documented coaching experience, mentor coaching and an assessment. At the time of writing these ran from 60 training hours and 100 coaching hours for the ACC to 200 training hours and 2,500 coaching hours for the MCC. Requirements change, so check the ICF's own site for the current rules.
Many coaches start with a program certificate, begin practicing, and decide later whether an ICF credential is worth the extra hours for the clients they serve. Corporate buyers are more likely to ask for one. Many private clients never do.

- It teaches coaching ethics and where coaching ends and therapy begins.

- Unit 6, Creating Coaching Programs and Packages. Turning what you do into something a client can buy, priced and structured so it delivers a measurable result.
- Unit 7, Starting a Life Coach Business. The practical setup behind the practice, from legal structure and pricing through to the day-to-day operations.
- Unit 8, Technology and Creating a Life Coach Website. The website, the booking system and the session tools that let one coach serve a full roster without losing evenings to admin.
- Unit 9, Marketing Your Life Coaching Business. How clients find you, from content and search through to the referrals that make marketing cost less over time.
- Unit 10, Client Management and Retention Strategies. Keeping clients engaged past the early enthusiasm, tracking real progress, and turning results into referrals.
The first six units build the coaching itself, from ethics and human behavior to session methods, rapport and the programs you will sell. The last four cover the business, from setting it up and building a website to marketing and keeping clients.
Each unit has a quiz and written assignments, and the exam is open book, with multiple-choice questions and written answers that a person reads and marks.

What life coach certification costs
